Manakin trail

On this short but enchanting 500-meter birdwatching trail will deliver an immersive experience in nature and a chance to spot a diverse array of bird species. Your adventure begins at a rustic dirt road, right near our guest house, inviting you into the heart of the wilderness with the sounds of rustling leaves and distant bird calls setting the tone for the journey ahead. A short distance along the trail, you will encounter a charming little bridge that goes over a small, clear stream. This picturesque spot is perfect for a brief pause to enjoy the gentle babble of the water and the surrounding flora, providing an excellent opportunity to spot small fish, insects, and local crustaceans like “pitu”, a type of freshwater shrimp.

Continuing on the trail, there will be a small clearing, where our guide will listen to what's in the proximity and will call the birds that are nearby. The clearing offers great lighting for amazing pictures of these special animals that are not easy to see outside of the forest.

A little further ahead the trail leads to an observation shelter strategically positioned for optimal birdwatching. This hide offers a comfortable and concealed vantage point, allowing you to observe birds without disturbing them. Here there is a great opportunity to take pictures of land birds from Mata Atlantica, and if you are lucky some mammals might show up to enjoy the scenery.

Bring your binoculars and camera to capture sightings of species such as the elegant Swallow-tailed Manakin, the vibrant Pin-tailed Manakin, and the charming Half-collared Sparrow. The shelter is also an ideal spot to witness the striking Gray-hooded Attila and the colorful Surucua Trogon.

After spending time at the observation shelter, the trail continues through diverse habitats, from dense foliage to open clearings. This section of the hike is a birder's paradise, offering the chance to see nearly 100 different bird species in their natural habitats. Keep an eye out for the more elusive and rare birds that make this area their home. Throughout the hike, our guides provide information about the local bird species and their habitats, enriching your experience with educational insights. The trail is well maintained, making it accessible for birdwatchers of many levels, from beginners to seasoned enthusiasts.

This 500-meter hike is not just a walk through nature; it’s a journey into the heart of a vibrant ecosystem teeming with avian life. Whether you are here to add to your lifer list or simply to enjoy the beauty of nature, this trail offers an unforgettable birdwatching experience.
