Discover a paradise on brazilian Mata Atlantica

Welcome to Patizal Bird and Animal Sanctuary, this birdwatching, animal sanctuary initiative was founded by The Toledo Piza family, the biologist and ornithologist Allan Clé Porto, and the biologist Guilherme Lessa, with a lot of support from Biosensu consult.

Fazenda Patizal is nestled where there are a lot of Mata Atlantica forests undergoing decades of regeneration.

The forest that was once cut down to serve as coffee fields and later served as the center of dairy farms of Sao Paulo state, is now becoming a healthy forest again, nestling many species of incredible animals.

About Mata Atlântica

Mata Atlântica, or Atlantic Forest, is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, spanning over 1.3 million square kilometers along the eastern coast of Brazil. This lush forest is renowned for its rich flora and fauna, including an incredible diversity of bird species. Bird watching, or birding, has become a popular activity in Mata Atlântica, attracting enthusiasts and ornithologists from around the world.

Mata Atlântica harbors an astonishing array of bird species, ranging from colorful parrots to elusive raptors. With over 930 recorded species, including endemics and rare birds, this forest is a paradise for bird watchers. Among the endemic species are the iconic Atlantic Royal Flycatcher (Onychorhynchus swainsoni), the critically endangered Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi), and the stunning Blue-bellied Parrot (Triclaria malachitacea). Moreover, Mata Atlântica serves as a crucial habitat for migratory birds, providing essential stopover sites during their long journeys.

There are several protected areas within Mata Atlântica that offer exceptional birding opportunities, each with its unique avian diversity and habitats. The Serra dos Órgãos National Park, located near Rio de Janeiro. The Itatiaia National Park, Brazil's oldest national park. The Intervales State Park in São Paulo state is celebrated for its pristine Atlantic Rainforest.

In all fairness we are in a fragment of Mata Atlantica in a less obvious area for birdwatching, but not less interesting. Amidst this backdrop of environmental degradation, fragments of the Mata Atlântica have emerged as crucial refuges for biodiversity and key players in conservation efforts. These fragmented remnants, though small in size compared to the original forest and larger patches, play a great role in maintaining ecosystem function and supporting wildlife populations.

One of the primary reasons for the importance of these fragments lies in their role as biodiversity hotspots. Despite their size, fragments of the Mata Atlântica are often home to a remarkable diversity of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic and endangered. By providing habitat for these species, these fragments serve as vital reservoirs of genetic diversity and sources for recolonization of degraded areas.
